Absolutely not!
Firstly, with respect to language - you will have no trouble in the city, let alone the college. Chennai is a diverse, fast-growing metropolis and everyone you're likely to interact with will be comfortable in either English or Hindi. On-campus, we have staff who are used to dealing with students from all over the country so communication will be effortless.
Secondly, the classes themselves are conducted solely in English so no matter where in the country you're from, academics will never be an issue.Thirdly, the food! The fare in the mess and private canteens is diverse (and dare we say, yummy). You'll find everything from North Indian staples to Jain food to global cuisine... And of course, amazing idli-dosa! Outside the campus, the city has evolved to become a true foodie’s paradise.
Lastly, the campus itself is multicultural. There is a sizeable student representation from all parts of the country. There are cultural events celebrating everything from Lohri to Onam, where everyone is involved. In fact, IITM is famous for its elaborate Holi celebration!
In the city too, you’ll find several entertainment and cultural offerings. We've also noticed that after coming to a new geography, many students have greatly expanded their world-view, something so vital for success in today’s global environment.
To sum up, with some confidence, we can say: IIT Madras is great for North Indian students.
